Happy Repeal Day

On December 5th 1933, the 18th amendment was repealed ending prohibition in America, a high-light among sad days in a desperate nation gripped by economic woes.  Some would say that there are similarities between the Great Depression to our dismal economy today.  Maybe our pending leap off of the “fiscal cliff” or our half a decade of stagnation will inspire the repeal of other prohibitions that still plague us.  To add to our woes the world is supposed to end on the 21st of December and if my memory serves I can’t remember the Mayans ever being wrong before.

I love a good reason to drink.  I say we celebrate this Repeal Day by shouting fiercely at the Mayans and their doom clock while drinking to our perseverance through these tough times.

Raise your glass with the original pre-prohibition cocktail, an Old Fashioned.

3oz Rye Whiskey

2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

1 Demorera Sugar Cube

1 Splash of Club Soda

Lots and Lots of Ice

Lemon Twist

Drop the sugar cube in a rocks glass and hit it with a splash of club soda.  Muddle that cube very well to help it dissolve and then add the bitters and the rye.  Stir to further incorporate the sugar and muddle more if necessary.  Cut a long piece of lemon zest and twist it skin side down over the glass.  Finally and gently add the ice and slide in the piece of lemon zest using it to give the ice a half spin around the glass.
