Smoke and Oakum

So much happened at Tales of the Cocktail.  I am still trying to process it all.  The biggest highlights were the people I met.  From time to time I will focus on one and thank them for their inspiration, guidance and friendship.

In honor of Black Tot Day I would like to reflect on the coolest and most unusual thing I tasted at TOTC.  Smoke and Oakum’s Gunpowder Rum from New Zealand is a historical  recreation of an old technique.  This is a wildly different rum created by Ben H Simpson that contains real gunpowder.  Just a few years ago Ben had a crazy idea and has dedicated his life to it.   Sadly I was only able to taste it in a cocktail, but it was one of the top three cocktails I had the entire week.  It was a Gun Powder Rum Blood and Sand, and I only wish I could make one, but I lack the primary ingredient.  Ben mentioned that when he has fresh blood oranges he makes a Blood Blood and Sand.  I must have one of these.

Ben sat on a panel with a few bitters makers (a future posts will be dedicated to them) in a session called Bedroom Brands.  A phenomenal session where three successful gentlemen described how they made something from nothing.  This was a very inspirational  for a guy like me who would really like to bring his own product to the world.

Here is a video that explains it all.
